"Free Machining" refers to a manufacturing process where additives are used to improve a metal's machinability.
The term machinability refers to the ease with which a metal can be machined to an acceptable surface finish. Free Machining materials can be cut quickly, easily obtain a good finish, and do not wear tooling down as much. The factors that typically improve a material's performance often degrade its machinability. Engineers regularly look for ways to improve machinability without harming performance.
Put simply...this stuff requires less elbow grease to finish, but may not be as strong.
