Aluminum 6061 T4 Sheet is solution heat treated and naturally aged giving it slightly lower tolerance accuracy than Aluminum 6061 T6 which undergoes artificial aging. T4 is slightly less expensive than T6, has a slightly lower ultimate tensile strength and yield strength, with a higher elongation percentage (materials with a higher percentage elongation can stretch more before breaking) – increasing the formability of the T4 temper. Bottom line: choose T4 tempering over T6 tempering if you are more concerned about cost and formability.
Aluminum 6061 has good mechanical properties and exhibits good weldability and brazability. It is one of the most common alloys of Aluminum for general purpose use. Combines relatively high strength, good workability, and high resistance to corrosion. Aluminum in general is more lightweight and less expensive than other metals, making it a popular material in the fabrication of aircraft and automotive panels, bicycle, car and trailer frames, packaging, and other projects where weight reduction and cost savings are important.
Solution heat treated, and naturally aged to a substantially stable condition. T4 tempering provides slightly lower ultimate and yield strength while increasing the elongation percentage and formability of the material. Generally T4 tempered material will be slightly less expensive than T6 tempering.
